‘The Hindu’ is one of the famous and oldest daily newspapers in India. Since 1878, it was published daily, wrapping up all the news stories along with many interesting articles. But, it did not come out on Wednesday and this happened for the first time in 137 years due. The reason behind it is that the co-workers were unable to access the press in Chennai, because of heavy rains and floods.

N Murali, the publisher of the paper, told BBC Hindi's Imran Qureshi that it happened for the first time. The rains in Tamil Nadu suspended trains and flights, leaving hundreds of people are without power.

Mr Murali said, "Our Maraimalainagar township was not accessible for the people who run the plant. So, none of our staff could reach the plant. It is located about 30kms (18 miles) from the city in Maraimalainagar,"

"The printing press plant is large so we put it up outside the city. Even if we had printed the paper, I doubt if it could have been distributed in the city," he added.

Even though it is not clear if the readers in the city got them to read, the other city newspapers like the Times of India, New Indian Express and the Deccan Chronicle were printed.

The army came in to rescue thousands of stranded people following two days of non-stop rains. Flights have been indefinitely suspended after flood waters entered the runway. Chennai’s most streets are waterlogged, while schools were shut down due to the rains for 17th day since November.
