President Donald Trump Signs Right-to-Try law, Try Experimental Treatments

United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed the Right-to-Try-law at the White house. The law allows terminally ill patients to attempt experimental treatments not presently sanctioned by the Food and Drug Administration.

The Right to Try Act was endorsed by Trump during his State of the Union Speech earlier this year. I want to give them a chance right here at home. It’s time for Congress to give these wonderful, incredible Americans the right to try.

During his speech in January endorsing the act Trump said, "People who are terminally ill should not have to go from country to country to seek a cure."

The bill was approved by the Senate unanimously in August earlier this year clearing Congress by 250-169 vote in late May.

"Today I am proud to keep another promise to the American people as I sign the Right to Try legislation into law," Trump said signing the act. "A lot of that trying is going to be successful. I really believe that."

The law lest patients with terminal illness attempt experimental drugs that have passed in the FDA approval process's first phase, that means the drugs have undergone beforehand testing on humans.

The approved medications should be tried by patients first before trying experimental drugs and once they've begun using them, patients would have to be constantly evaluated.

"Terminally ill patients and their families now have more freedom and more hope!" Senator Ron Johnson wrote on Twitter after the bill signing.

Trump said that when he was presented with two versions of the bill, he asked for the one that would put the interests of the people before the interests of insurance and pharmaceutical companies.

The president pointed out the to approve new drugs it takes up to 15 years.

"And we’re moving that timeline way up anyway, beyond this. We’re moving it way up," the president added.
