How to Protect your Skin and Hair from Pollution?

Pollution has silently emerged as one of the biggest outside factors harming the skin and scalp. In urban areas, the combination of dust, smoke, and humidity creates a layer on the skin in just a few minutes, which disrupts the skin's protective barrier more than many think. Dr Abhishek Pilani, who founded Assure Clinic and is a specialist in Dermatology, Hair Transplant, and Restoration, mentions that several of his clients do not spend much time outside, yet still deal with issues like dull skin, acne breakouts, or sudden rough patches because the skin is always battling environmental pollutants. Dr Pilani notes that the scalp is just as sensitive. Pollutants blend with sweat and natural oils, resulting in itching, dandruff, and visible hair loss. "People think pollution only impacts those who are outdoors for long periods, but even a little exposure each day can irritate both the skin and scalp," he points out. Dr Pilani stresses that the most important and effective action is regular cleaning. "Using a gentle, non-drying face wash twice daily can remove pollutants without causing irritation," he explains. For the scalp, he recommends washing it two to three times a week, particularly on days when air quality worsens.

It is equally important to strengthen the skin barrier. Dr Pilani suggests applying a light moisturizer containing ceramides or niacinamide to help the skin heal and stay strong throughout the day. "No matter what the weather is like, sunscreen is still the best protective layer we have," he adds. For hair care, Dr Pilani recommends using a small amount of serum or leave-in conditioner to form a barrier that decreases dryness and frizz caused by pollution. He believes that simple daily practices can significantly help. "Covering your hair while traveling, limiting face touching, and drinking enough water can all lead to noticeable improvements," he stresses. While we cannot completely avoid pollution, Dr Pilani is confident that following a steady, thoughtful routine can help manage its effects on the skin and scalp. "You cannot escape pollution," he states, "but you can definitely strengthen your skin and hair to endure it."
