According to a report on the official website of the Association of UK Dietitians, chrononutrition is an evolving sector of nutritional science focused on understanding how the timings of our meals, alongside what and how much we consume, can affect our health. The scientific literature initially defined this concept, as described in Cell, by the notion that "the timing of food intake, alongside the quantity and quality of food, is vital for an organism's health." Reports indicate that Dr. Alain Delabos, a French nutritionist, first coined the term chrononutrition in the 1980s, referring to the timing, frequency, and regularity of meals in relation to the body’s circadian rhythms.

Our bodies operate on internal clocks known as circadian rhythms, which are managed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the brain. This central clock reacts to signals of light and darkness. Additionally, our liver, pancreas, and stomach have their own peripheral clocks, significantly affected by meal times. In the morning, our bodies exhibit increased insulin sensitivity, heightened digestive activity, and a peak metabolism, making it the optimal moment to intake a larger portion of daily calories. A study published in the journal Obesity revealed that individuals who consumed a greater number of calories at breakfast while limiting evening intake experienced more weight loss and improved insulin levels compared to those who reversed this pattern.

As night approaches, our bodies naturally begin to wind down. Consuming substantial meals late in the evening can hinder digestion, elevate blood sugar levels, and disturb sleep patterns. Research found in the journal Nutrients has associated late-night eating with an elevated risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. While chrononutrition appears to be a sensible concept, it is not a universal remedy for all health challenges; its effectiveness can vary based on personal lifestyle choices, dietary habits, and existing health conditions.
