Sidharth Malhotra Hasee Toh Phasee Movie Review and Rating

What happens when two polarized cinematic sensibilities — Karan Johar (the chalk) and Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and Vikal Bahl (the cheese) — collaborate? Why, a genuinely hatke fare, of course! Bright-and-breezy, 'Hasee Toh Phasee' is one quirky contemporary romcom that will surely warm the cockles of your heart, more so if you are a die-hard romantic who unabashedly subscribes to Bollywood love formula.

Story

Nikhil (Sidhharth Malhotra) is the quintessential good-at-heart young guy. Meeta (Parineeti Chopra) is an oddball scientist. Both are at odds with the rest of their sane family and are struggling to "fit in".

Nikhil first bumps into rebellious Meeta (Parineeti Chopra) during her sister Diksha's wedding and gets infatuated to her another sister Karishma (Adah Sharma).

Seven years later, Nikhil and Karishma are busy with their pre-wedding preparations, when Meeta returns to Mumbai after a long stay away from home (only Karishma knows that she's back!). Karishma requests Nikhil to find her a place to stay, away from her family. Not happy with the accommodation, Meeta moves in with Nikhil's parents (Sharat Saxena, Neena Kulkarni) and relatives. Their world goes topsy-turvy when they get attracted to each other. And from there, begins a quirky love tale of opposites falling in love! Sounds like a stereotype? Fear not, 'Hasee Toh Phasee' is refreshingly distinctive, in the way the two quirky characters handle the matters of heart that saves interests from drying up.

Analysis :

Debutante director Vinil Mathew weaves a simplistic environ, spinning a slew of wonderful moments in the narrative. It's not a slapstick, thankfully, but more of a subtle and situational film. There are ample moist-eyed scenes, but thankfully again, they don't wear you down.

It is ingeniously filmed and has the deserved finesse. Vishal-Shekhar's musical score is soothing-and-soulful and entertaining which just adds to the appeal.

Parineeti Chopra might be just three films old, but that doesn't really make her any less favorite with the critics and masses alike. With 'Hasee Toh Phasee', she once again proves why she is hailed as the most promising actor of her generation. Clearly, Parineeti steals the show here. She pulls off the tricky role of the super intelligent, oddball, depressed, addict and socially-awkward scientist Meeta with aplomb. She ably holds the film and taps on to Meeta's weaknesses, instead of playing it over the top, and drawing genuine empathy for her. Here comes yet another stellar performance by the lady.

Sidharth is a revelation! Just one film old, he pulls off the role of the middle class guy with great maturity, bringing utmost sensitivity to situations and add a lot of credibility to the tale. To cut the long story short, the two actors bear the weight of the love story ably on their shoulders, without floundering in a single sequence.

Adah Sharma is first-rate once again. The film stars a host of talented names such as Sharat Saxena, Manoj Joshi, Sameer Khakhar and Neena Kulkarni. Manoj Joshi isoutstanding] and Sameer Khakhar is exceptional in their roles.

Final Word:
Hasee Toh Phasee is for those who like their martinis stirred not shaken. Highlighting the oddities in human nature, the movie delves subtly and draws humor out of everyday situations. If you're looking to rediscover the magic of goofy love around Valentines, this is one movie date worth going for.
