Vietnamese electric car company VinFast Auto Ltd has officially introduced its VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs in India, making a significant move into the country's rapidly growing electric vehicle market. With this launch, the company aims to establish its presence in the high-end electric vehicle category, competing with local companies as well as well-known global brands. To support its entry into India, VinFast has revealed plans to build a manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu. This factory, considered vital for the company's worldwide goals, will begin with the ability to produce 50,000 vehicles each year, with intentions to increase that to 150,000 units. According to CEO Pham Sanh Chau, the facility in India is designed not only for the local market but also to serve as a hub for exporting to regions like South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

The VF6 and VF7 vehicles display impressive performance and cutting-edge technology. The VF7 Wind model is equipped with a 70.8 kWh battery that delivers 150 kW of power and 310 Nm of torque. Both models include Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that feature adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. The VF6 can travel up to 468 km on one charge, while the VF7 can go as far as 532 km, according to certification from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). In addition to their performance, the new SUVs offer luxurious features such as vegan leather seats, panoramic glass rooftops, and a 12.9-inch infotainment display with wireless connectivity. VinFast is also providing attractive customer offers, including a battery warranty of 10 years or 200,000 km, three years of free servicing, and free charging at VGreens charging stations until July 2028.

VinFast has set attractive prices for its models to win over Indian buyers in the premium market. The starting price for the VF6 Earth model is ₹16.49 lakh, while the VF7 Earth model starts at ₹20.89 lakh, and the highest-end VF7 Sky Infinity, which includes dual-motor all-wheel drive, is priced at ₹25.49 lakh. Customers can start booking these SUVs with a down payment of ₹21,000. To expand its presence, VinFast has teamed up with 13 dealership groups and is set to open 32 dealerships across 27 cities, with a plan to grow to 35 outlets by the end of 2025. This strategy shows the company's long-term intention to build a strong operation in India. Emphasizing the importance of the Indian market, CEO Pham Sanh Chau said, “India is key to our goals. Our entry into India focused on understanding their needs, and the response has been amazing.” Vehicles produced in India will also support VinFast’s export plans, highlighting the significance of the Tamil Nadu facility in its global strategy.

India's electric vehicle market is just starting out, with electric cars making up a tiny part of all vehicle sales. Nonetheless, the government has a bold goal of having 30% of vehicles be electric by 2030. VinFast is coming into the market with long-range SUVs offered at competitive prices, which should help more people buy electric cars and add more options in the high-end EV category. VinFast's introduction happens alongside Tesla’s arrival in India. In July, Tesla opened its first experience center at Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai and plans to set up another one in the Delhi NCR region. So far, Tesla has received a little over 600 orders for cars—this is a small number considering its global scale, as Tesla sells that amount every four hours around the world. Deliveries from Shanghai are likely to start in September, with 350 to 500 cars expected this year.

Tesla had originally planned to use its annual limit of 2,500 cars, but high import taxes have increased the prices—an entry-level Tesla sells for about $68,000 or ₹59 lakh, which limits its market appeal. Although CEO Elon Musk hoped for lower tariffs through trade discussions, those talks have not made progress. Still, Tesla has recruited sales and service personnel in India, showing its strong commitment to the high-end electric vehicle market despite challenges. With VinFast introducing locally made models and Tesla bringing in its cars at high prices, India's electric vehicle market is set for a thrilling growth period. Even though issues like tariffs and infrastructure exist, the entry of international companies is likely to give Indian consumers more options and speed up the shift towards green transportation.
