Female Students Wearing Sexy Outfits on Graduation Day perceived Less Capable, Study Finds March 23, 2019 17:32

A recent study has found that female graduates who wear sexy clothes on their graduation day are likely to be less capable than female graduates who dress professionally by their counterparts. Female graduates who dress sexily at their graduation were perceived as less capable and it was believed that they performed worse in their degree than their peers who dress more professionally, according to a study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology. For the study, the researchers investigated the perceptions of female clothing at university graduations in Italy. Participants were presented with 24 photographs of females who had recently graduated, 12 of these photographs involved sexy outfits consisting of short dresses or skirts, low necklines and high heels, and 12 photographs of females in a professional outfit of a jacket and trousers.Participants were then asked to estimate the final mark of the females in the pictures and, to rate their sexiness, competence and outfit appropriateness.Female graduates who dressed more professionally were perceived by participants as having a higher final mark and thesis points and to be more capable than their peers who dressed in short dresses and skirts. Participants also deemed professional attire more appropriate for graduation. In addition, the researchers exposed an additional group of 573 participants, namely female students, university professors and members of the general population, to photographs of 37 female students who were asked to wear two outfits, one professional and one sexy.Fabio Fasoli, the lead researcher said, "The intelligence and competence of females are unfairly linked to how they present themselves. A top student who decides to wear a short dress to her graduation is perceived to be less capable than another who chooses to wear trousers and a jacket. It is often thought that how we dress is a reflection of our personality but this may not be the case for women, given that they are constantly scrutinized for their appearance and those unmerited conclusions are drawn about them, including their intelligence and professional capability."Participants were asked to rate the students' performance, future career success and whether they would have worn the outfits they were presented with. Similar to previous results, participants viewed students who dressed more professionally to be more competent and as having achieved a higher final mark.Interestingly, female student peers perceived the professionally dressed students as more likely to find a job and to have a booming career than when the same students were dressed in a sexy outfit. But then, adult participants judged the students wearing a sexy outfit as having an advantage, and having higher chances of success in the job market. When asked which outfit they would have chosen, sexy or professional, male participants were more likely than female participants to claim that they would have chosen to wear the sexy outfit if they were the student.By Sowmya Sangam

‘American Companies Now Choosing Hyderabad over Bengaluru’: U.S. Consul General Katherine B Hadda March 23, 2019 17:22

The United States companies, for the most part, are choosing Hyderabad over Bengaluru to set up shop because in Hyderabad real estate is inexpensive, trade investment policies are favorable, and ease of doing business is greater, the United States Consul General Katherine B Hadda told the Indian Express on Friday. Hadda acclaimed the two Telugu-speaking states - Andhra Pradesh and Telangana - as the best in the country in attracting investments from foreign firms.“I see a lot of companies expanding their footprint in Hyderabad. And what I am told - even though there are more companies in Bengaluru - a lot of these companies are preferring to either open up operations or expand here in Hyderabad rather than in Bengaluru, because real estate is much cheaper here, because the trade investment policies are open and helpful.“You have a situation of presupposed approvals here - that if a company does not hear from the government with questions, or saying that they cannot invest here, then the investment is presumed to be approved in 15-30 days. In Andhra Pradesh, the situation is similar,” Hadda told Indian Express. Hadda’s term of office as Consul General is set to end later this year. She conceded that the situation of the Indo-U.S. trade relationship was “not positive” in the country. “What we are seeing now are developments that we see considerably less positive - national government’s economic policy vis-a-vis our economic interests. There have been more restrictions placed on our e-commerce companies like Walmart that invested in Flipkart.“What we find is, especially the atmosphere in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, is open and fair-minded. Once the elections are over, we would highlight what we consider the best practices,” Hadda was quoted as saying by Indian Express. She also said the Embassy sends inputs on the economic/political scenario and the sector-wise analysis of the industry in the States where the Consulate is based, back to the United States. “We have the foreign commercial services to analyze a certain sector and what the situation they are in. However, we will never make a recommendation to companies and ask them where to invest,” the Consul General said, adding that the department only “supports” American companies wanting to invest in the country.By Sowmya Sangam

Four Indian American Teen Girls Awarded $25,000 Each for Inventions in Combating Air, Water Pollution March 23, 2019 10:44

Indian students abroad are availing oneself of all possible times to make the home country proud. This time four Indian American teenagers have been awarded $25,000 each for developing groundbreaking approaches to address environmental issues. The recipients of the award are Anjali Chadha (16) of Kentucky, Preeti Sai Krishnamani (17) of Delaware, Navami Jain (17) of North Carolina and Sai Preethi Mamidala (17) of Pennsylvania, the American Bazaar daily reported.Chadha, currently a student at duPont Manual Magnet High School, has built a device that is a sensor for detecting arsenic, a harmful substance known to cause cancer, in well water sources. She was inspired to develop the sensor when she discovered that groundwater within 90 miles of her home was contaminated with arsenic.Almost around 50 million Americans use well water as their primary source and could be at risk for contamination.Krishnamani’s goal was to combat arsenic contamination in rice. "The way I am trying to do that is by enhancing soil minerals that can bind up arsenic and make it inaccessible to rice plants," she told the American Bazaar. Her solution is silicon amendments - rice husk and rice husk ash - which are waste products of rice production and can be recycled into paddies to eventually combat arsenic contamination in the crop.Jain performed a series of evaluations looking at different ways to produce bio-ethanol, a type of biofuel that is considered greener to conventional fossil energy sources as it is biodegradable and non-toxic."The major controversy around ethanol production is that it is being produced from food-based crops like corn. I'm looking at ways to produce it from agricultural-based matter and different waste products such as wheat straw," she said. Her results indicated that producing bio-ethanol from wheat straw may increase efficiency and lower costs.Mamidala, driven by the effects of fossil-fuel pollution in India, studied an optimal catalyst to make renewable energy more accessible.A senior at Garnet Valley High School in Glen Mills, she examined the catalyst in "a fuel cell that can store energy while it is being produced and generate it when it is needed. The actual catalyst being used in the fuel cell makes a world of difference in its performance".The four teenagers are all finalists of this year's Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation's oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors.By Sowmya Sangam
