Amid a row over cyber-hacking in the US presidential elections, Russia's Foreign Ministry has requested President Vladimir Putin to expel 35 American diplomats from the country in a tit-for-tat to a similar move by Washington, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

Mr. Lavrov said in televised comments, “Russia's foreign ministry has requested that the Russian President approve declaring as personae non gratae 31 employees of the US embassy in Moscow and four diplomats from the US consulate in Saint Petersburg.”

Earlier, the Russian president said in a statement on the Kremlin’s website, “We will make further steps to help resurrect Russian-American relations based on the policies that the administration of Trump will pursue.”

On the other hand, the United States president-elect Donald Trump praised the Russian President Vladimir Putin for abstaining from retaliation in a dispute over cyber attacks and spying in the US presidential elections held on November 8.
