Witnesses mentioned that the public anger stemmed not from the social media ban but from an alleged police shooting of unarmed youth and children aged 10 to 28 on September 8, who were peacefully protesting against government corruption and the social media ban. “This has turned into a nationwide movement. It’s not only Gen Z participants but also their parents and others who are now joining the protests. There are no more age restrictions on who can take part. Why did they have to open fire on innocent kids and young adults when they were peacefully protesting? That’s what set everything off,” a health worker in Kathmandu expressed. Nepal's Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli stepped down on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, while anti-corruption protests continued throughout the nation.

Protests led by Nepal’s younger generation persisted for a second day on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, even though local authorities in three districts of the Kathmandu Valley imposed a morning curfew.

On Monday, September 8, 2025, at least 19 people, mostly youths, died when police used rubber bullets and live rounds against demonstrations organized by Nepal’s youth, who are calling for an end to corruption, nepotism, favoritism, and poor governance. Approximately 400 others were reported injured. Considering the ongoing situation in Nepal, Indian citizens are recommended to postpone their travel plans there until things become more stable. Indian nationals currently in Nepal should stay where they are, avoid going outside, and exercise caution. They are also encouraged to heed local safety instructions from Nepalese authorities and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a Cabinet Committee on Security meeting to address the events in Nepal, where violent protests have led to the downfall of K.P. Sharma Oli's government, emphasizing that the stability, peace, and prosperity of Nepal are very important to India.

Mr. Modi characterized the violence in Nepal, which has resulted in at least 19 fatalities, as heartbreaking and called on “my brothers and sisters in Nepal to embrace peace.”
