Recent research shared in the American Journal of Public Health shows that materials like polyester, which fit snugly, create a perfect space for bacteria to grow, especially E. coli, a major cause of UTIs. The urinary tract has natural defenses to stop bacteria from entering. However, wearing tight jeans for long periods restricts air, increases friction, and traps moisture, making a warm, damp area where germs can grow. This environment helps bacteria multiply and move toward the urethra and bladder, potentially leading to an infection.
The danger increases when one wears synthetic materials, such as jeans made from polyester or spandex blends, as they keep heat and moisture trapped longer than fabrics like cotton. While both genders can get UTIs, women are much more at risk. This is because women have a shorter urethra, making it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder. Changes in hormones, especially during menopause, may further weaken the body's natural defenses by affecting its pH and reducing protective bacteria. Certain types of birth control, like diaphragms and spermicides, can also upset the balance of healthy bacteria in the vagina, increasing the risk. Healthcare providers suggest some straightforward yet effective alternatives:

Limit the time wearing tight jeans, especially in warm or humid conditions.
Drink plenty of water and practice good hygiene.
