5 Tips to Survive a Long Flight February 18, 2019 16:21

Traveling by flight for a longer length of time is the weariest and tedious experience and as much as you detest it, you for sure cannot give it a miss if you wish to reach your destination. And to make the long haul flights seem less like torture, we give you some travel tips that one must always bear in mind. Your Own Entertainment The best way to kill your time of a long flight is by watching movies, series or reading books. Though most flights have the in-flight entertainment service you may not every time get the sought after choice. It is more advantageous for you if carry your own iPad, laptop or a Kindle that has your choices ladened. Make certain that you are carrying fully charged devices or have extra batteries with you. Pre-Book Your Seat Quite a few airlines might charge you extra for pre-booking your seat but do it. If you love the window seat or the aisle seat, mark your spot when you book your tickets. The middle seat in airplanes is one of the illest at ease spots you would find yourself during a long distance flight. Therefore choose a seat that is comfortable for you. Wear Cosy Clothes Don’t get into the trap of airport fashion, especially if you have long flights. Wear the most comfortable clothes, such as track pants and a tee or a loose dress. Always carry a jacket or a scarp along as it will get cold in the plane. Cover yourself well and choose closed shoes. Being at comfort is crucial when you are traveling on long flights. Carry the Right Accessories Regardless of your flight being long or a short distance, without fail, carry the right travel accessories. Carry noise nullification headphones, eye masks, pillow etc and the accessories will make your long journeys seem to a certain extent better. Get an Upgrade If you are a recurrent flyer and have gathered enough points, it is best to use them on your long flights. It is in all likelihood the only way long-distance flights may seem comfortable and you would not even feel the jetlag since you get good space to relax, stretch and take a nap. -Sowmya Sangam

Government Will Use Artificial Intelligence(AI) for Good Governance: Suresh Prabhu February 18, 2019 16:14

Suresh Prabhu,Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, said that Government will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) for good governance and proper regulations and corrective action will be taken to protect citizen’s privacy and ownership of data. “India is transporting more data than US and China put together and the top six companies in the world are using this data with value addition and monetization. India is strengthening its legal system and regulatory framework to deal with this world of digital data,” he added. Speaking at the the International Colloquium on Ethics and Governance of Autonomous AI system for a better world, Minister said, “ Artificial Intelligence is the technology of today and one who masters will rule the world.” India is working on developing a strategy for the better use of AI for common good. The two-day event has been organized by Department of Science and Technology, CMS, ITUAPT and InfocomThink Tank. The opening session was addressed by Prof. K Vijay Raghvan, Principal Scientific Advisor to Government of India and Dr. R. S. Sharma, Chairman, TRAI. Prof. Vijay Raghvan. They said that Government has taken the initiative to formulate a national strategy for use of AI and make the process transparent and participative in order to create awareness in civil society about AI. This is the first time in human history that machines are taking decisions based on data and experience and we have to learn to deal with this kind of decision making. Government will have to put in place mechanisms on how data is used and algorithms are written. As all the data being generated in world today is being controlled by few companies, it is creating asymmetries as very few create, understand and use this data. This has given rise to a very powerful elite who are controlling millions of lives. Dr. R. S. Sharma, Chairman TRAI, said that a data rich country like India must develop a national policy spelling out ownership of data, privacy of data generated by citizens and issues of data portability so that the sovereignty of country is not compromised. The event will see many international experts brainstorm about ethics of AI and machine learning, legalities, application of AI, relevance of block chain technology and effect of automation on the labour force. Professors from five IITs, CDAC and other renowned institutions are participating in this two-day Colloquium. -Sai Kumar

Chief Selector MSK Prasad on Virat Kohli’s Batting Position In World Cup February 18, 2019 14:33

Chief of Selection Committee MSK Prasad said that Virat Kohli at number 4 is a ‘wonderful thought’. These comments came after Team India’ Coach Ravi Shastri said that Virat Kohli can play at number 4 position in world Cup in England. Prasad said that virat kohli is the No.1 batsman in the world and had done extremely well at No.3 batting position. However, he added that if situation arises virat can bat at No.4 according to the team dynamics. In a recent interview to Hotstar,MSK Prasad said that, “I think it is a wonderful thought that Virat Kohli can bat at No.4 and that is what Ravi Shastri has expressed. This has been happening for quite some time, but we will have to see. Because Virat has done extremely well at No.3. He is the No.1 batsman in the world. But if it is for the requirement of the team and Virat has to come at No.4 he will definitely do it. But again, we will have to see what the team requires and what the dynamics of the team is. That will decide his batting position.” Though most of the former Indian Cricketers are against this idea said India has formidable top order batsmen and don’t want change in batting position of top three batsmen. Earlier Ravi Shastri told to Cricbuzz that “The good thing about this Indian top-three is we can separate them, if conditions and situations demand. Someone like Virat Kohli can go to number four, and we can put a good number three to bring more balance to the batting line-up. That’s flexibility for you, and for big tournaments like the World Cup, you have to be flexible to see what’s the best balance for the side. So we will decide that (accordingly in England).” Shastri feels that Ambati Rayudu can come up the order and bat at No.3 “Maybe Rayudu, or someone else, could bat at number three, and Kohli comes in at number four. We wouldn’t want to disturb the opening combination. Separating the top-three could make the batting stronger.” -Sai Kumar

U.S. Begins Premium Processing of H-1B Visa, Slight Relief to Indian IT Firms February 18, 2019 12:33

The premium processing for all H-1B applications registered on or before December 21, 2018, will be recommenced, said the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) earlier this week. Allegedly in order to clear the backlog in new applications, the process was adjourned in April earlier this year. The application numbers have increased abruptly in the past four years. The proclamation by the USCIS would bring slight comfort to the Indian Information Technology companies, which are presently going through deficit of talents in the U.S. The programme was highly beneficial to the Indian IT industry. Premium processing of H-1B visa lets processing of applications in the duration of 15 days for an extra fee of $1,410 per application, not including the base fee. The move allows employers a faster route to get skilled talent in the U.S. The Donald Trump administration has made momentous changes to the H-1B visa system, as well as reversing the order in which the USCIS selects H-1B petitions. It would as well probably result in increase in number of petitions from applicants with higher degree from a U.S. institution of higher education. Citing a long-pending backlog, the immigration agency had suspended premium processing in April earlier this year. But then, it was open for specific categories such as extension of H1B visa with the same employer. Peter Bendor-Samuel, chief executive officer, at research firm Everest Group, said it is a helpful move for the IT industry. “The importance of this development goes beyond the reinstatement of the accelerated H-1B application as it signals a change in policy from the administration, with regard to high-skill immigration. The Indian firms will benefit from this,” he said. Likewise, the USCIS released data over the time taken to process visa applications from financial year 2015. The time taken to process a premium H-1B application rose from 18 days in the last four years to 1 month in Fiscal year 2019 (until October 2018). The time period taken to process a normal H-1B application also increased from 3.2 months in FY2018 to 5.2 months in FY2019. The industry body, National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), said it was still assessing the impact of the announcement. "We are in touch with members to check implications. This only applies to filings prior to December 21, 2018, and does not have any implications on any filing after that, or filings that will happen in the upcoming lottery season," said Shivendra Singh, vice-president, global trade development, Nasscom. Immigration law firm Fragomen said it was not yet clear what will happen to the premium processing applications filed on or after December 22, 2018. "The USCIS has not yet announced whether premium processing will be available for the upcoming H1B cap season," it added. The local hiring by the Indian IT companies in the United States such as Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), HCL Technologies, and Wipro, were increased in aftermath to the tightening H-1B visa norms. Though the recent recommencement in premium processing of H-1B visas will be a little alleviation for the IT companies, it will not be sufficient to overcome the demand-supply gap. “It (resuming premium processing) does not signal a reversal in the Indian firms' need or commitment to hire more U.S. employees. We expect programs such as Infosys' direct hiring from college to continue and accelerate. The need for skilled workers is so great that, even with all these improvements, there is still likely to be a shortage,” added Bendor-Samuel. -Sowmya Sangam

‘Most Fearful Experience so far’, Recounts Indian Students Detained in U.S. Varsity Sting February 18, 2019 10:50

The psychological state of Indian students detained in the United States for allegedly violating student visa norms has been exhausted and horrifying. The students were put in the detention centers a long way from cities, and allegedly in the company of drug traffickers and killers. Almost 129 Indian students, mostly from two Telugu states - Andhra Pradesh and Telangana - arrested in the fake university racket, may go into depression if not released immediately or if the government fails to initiate a dialogue with the U.S. authorities, says Parmesh Bheemreddy, president of American Telugu Association (ATA). Only a few students have been released on bail while 19 have been permitted to leave the States without facing charges. Those who have come out on bail have re-counted terrible accounts about their stay in the detention centers to ATA representatives, calling it the most fearful experience of their life up to now. “They never expected such harsh treatment from U.S. authorities and some of them broke down in front of us while sharing details of their stay in detention centers,” a representative of a Telugu association says. “We are worried that several girl students have also faced similar treatment,” he adds. Though comparable situations were experienced by Telugu students earlier, they were not given such harsh treatment at that time. In 2011 and 2013, the U.S. authorities made a raid on Herguan University and the Tri-Valley University in California with charges of violation of student visa norms and not preserving obligatory standards. A majority of those caught were Telugu students. In the Farmington University issue, students got admitted for their second master’s to keep alive the Optional Practical Training (OPT) status that permits them to work in the U.S. in their related fields for the period of 24 months, and also use the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) option in which they can work part-time as part of their course of study. The return of a majority of such students is imminent now, says Nishidhar Borra, a consultant. However, what needs to be done by the government in India is to wake up at least now to collect data of students going overseas. “It is necessary to track them from day one so that they are not cheated by consultants or middlemen in the USA. Even if the government wants to come to their rescue immediately, they need to have the data in hand,” Borra says. -Sowmya Sangam
