Mahasen cyclone hits Bangladesh, one dead

Bangladesh was struck by winds that were over 90 kmph today in the morning, the winds of which belonged to the cyclonic storm Mahasen which resulted in at least one death, officials reported.

Entering the nation from the coast at Patuakhali, it is expected to move further up in the northeastern direction to cross Chittagong-Cox's Bazar coast by noon of May 16, Meteorological department of Bangladesh said.

It said the storm was centered at 9am about 270 kms southwest of Chittagong Port, 225 kms southwest of Cox's Bazar Port and 210 kms south of Mongla port. There is a chance of the winds speeding up as they widen in impact at the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar.

In Patuakhali, one person reportedly fell victim to the winds and the high rise waters of the Bay of Bengal. At least a hundred huts were reportedly damaged with the heavy gusts of wind that resulted in power blackouts in the region.

Earlier on Wednesday, several thousands of people were evacuated from the regions that were indicated by the met department to be affected by the cyclones. Evacuation camps were launched, and the rescue forces were readied yesterday night. Troops, ships and helicopters were arranged to launch rescue operations when the cyclonic storm hits the coast.
