Google is said to be trying out a new option for Gemini, which is designed to help users of other chatbots switch over to Google's AI system more easily. According to reports, the tech company based in Mountain View is developing a feature called “Import AI chats” that allows users to transfer their complete chat records from another platform, like OpenAI's ChatGPT, to Gemini. With this feature, users won't have to be concerned about losing their current work or having to explain their preferences to Gemini when changing platforms. The concept of being tied to one ecosystem is familiar to many, and it can be frustrating for users. Whether it is switching between Android and iOS, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, or choosing between PlayStation and Xbox, moving data from one platform to another is often annoying. As AI chatbots become more popular, a similar issue is expected to arise. These systems not only use information from earlier chats but also create a memory that helps long-term users enjoy a personalized experience that new users cannot achieve right away.

This situation results in users feeling trapped in one ecosystem. A report from TestingCatalog suggests that Google is working to avoid this issue while attracting new users by creating the “Import AI chats” feature. The feature was found in the web version as a beta option, meaning it is not yet available to everyone. However, this indicates that it's almost ready and could be launched for public use soon. The report mentions that this feature can be found under the attachments icon at the bottom of the message box on the website. Clicking this option brings up a pop-up with directions on how users can import their chats from ChatGPT, Claude, or Grok into Gemini. The process appears to be straightforward, as users only need to download their chat history and then upload it using the tool. Some features of this function are still unclear. For example, once the chat history is imported, will Gemini automatically combine all the preferences and context, or could there be issues if some preferences conflict with what has already been set in Gemini? Additionally, the functionality of memory remains uncertain.
