North Carolina receives less than 1% funds for Hurricane Matthew relief

North Carolina will only receive less than 1% of the federal funds that it requested to cover the destruction associated with Hurricane Matthew that hit the East Coast in October last year.

The state requested for $929 million from the federal government, but just received $6.1 million, which is below one percent of the total requested funds, according to an announcement from Democratic Governor Roy Cooper.

Governor Cooper said that the funds were meant for housing and business repairs, housing elevation, agriculture, public facilities repairs, and health and mental services.

Copper said that he was feeling “shock and disappointment in the lack of federal funding for Hurricane Matthew recovery efforts,” in a letter addressed to President Donald Trump, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson and congressional leaders.

“I write to express shock and disappointment in the lack of federal funding for Hurricane Matthew recovery efforts in North Carolina, and encourage you to prioritize North Carolina’s urgent request for help,” Cooper wrote.

At least 28 people died in the storm and the state suffered an estimated damage of $1.5 billion. 80,000 households in the state registered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for help.

“Families across Eastern North Carolina need help to rebuild and recover, and it is an incredible failure by the Trump Administration and Congressional leaders to turn their backs,” Cooper said in a statement.

“Matthew was an historic storm and we are still working every day to help families return home and rebuild their communities. North Carolinians affected by this storm cannot be ignored by the Trump Administration and Congressional leadership, and I will continue to work with our Congressional delegation to get North Carolina residents affected by the storm the help they deserve,” he added.
