Human Trafficking Awareness in North Carolina

A press conference was held by Parents Against Trafficking Humans in North Carolina at the Salvation Army of Wake County in Raleigh on 17th January. To raise the awareness about the human trafficking, Human trafficking includes sex trafficking as well as labor trafficking.

It is Human Trafficking Awareness Month in North Carolina and the event has recognized 8 actions to stop human trafficking in North Carolina. Human trafficking includes sex and labor trafficking.

Co-founder of Parents Against Trafficking Humans (PATH) Patricia Witt said in the conference that today they were celebrating the collaborative efforts of the groups around North Carolina that are making a huge impact and helps the citizenry aware about the human trafficking.

William Polk from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety said that one of the reasons, why most of the human traffickers are attracted to North Carolina is the multiple highways.

Polk also said that “Unfortunately North Carolina has become a major corridor for the traffickers to move people for many reasons, let the reason be labor or for the sex trade.

According to a local news report, 71 % of the victims of human trafficking are women and girls among them almost one-third are children.

In September last year, a 25 year old Brittany Herdon was charged by Fayetteville Police\'s Human Trafficking Unit for sexual exploitation of a minor and for promoting prostitution of a juvenile.

In the same month a suspect Roland Jeremy Snoke was arrested in Fayetteville for promoting prostitution, he was arrested by the Cumberland Co Sheriffs Office Human Trafficking Unit

Another suspect Michael Dwain Sander as arrested in Raleigh for human trafficking in August.

Polk said that parents must keep an eye on friends of their children and monitor their children social media accounts.

\"Being very vigilant with their children about their social media accounts,\" Polk said. \"Many times kids can easily be lured into these trafficking rings by social media internet solicitation.\"
