Dr. Sanjay Kumar Indian origin American is charged with money laundering and possession of firearms.
The US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina had announced that the federal grand jury in Greenville returned a 31-count indictment charging physician Dr. Sanjay Kumar, 50 years old, a resident in New Bern, with a conspiracy to unlawfully dispense of distribute oxycodone, oxymorphone, hydromorphone, and alprazolam; distribution of oxycodone and alprazolam; and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime; engaging in monetary transactions in property derived from specified unlawful activity; and laundering of monetary instruments.
According to the Justice Department, if Kumar is convicted, he can be sentenced to imprisonment for maximum 20 years and will be fine up to one million dollars, and a term of supervised released which will be not less than three years followed by any term of imprisonment.
Kumar was the head of New Bern Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation was arrested in June last year at a traffic signal after a lengthy investigation conducted by both the Coastal Narcotics Enforcement Team and the State Bureau of Investigation.
In summer last year Captain John Whitfield of the Craven County Sherif’s department said a search was conducted in Kumar’s home at 616 Gethsemane Church Road near New Bern, which resulted in finding “trafficking levels of controlled substances.
Previously Kumar was also charged five times for misdemeanor counts for stalking his neighbors.
At present Kumar is placed in Craven County Jail in lieu for $2 million bond. He told to he judge at the time that “He is going to fight against all the charges, humbly and boldly”.
