North Carolina plans to remove seven railway crossings

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has proposed its new plans to eliminate seven railway crossings in the state in coming years.

Locomotives barreling across roads often cause serious damage to the motorists.

The railway crossings have always been a major concern to Monica Verhaeghe of Raleigh, whose children go to a preschool in Millbrook Road, which is near to Atlantic Avenue and a busy railway intersection.

"This particular track crossing is really dangerous because it's literally right outside our school," Verhaeghe said.

“I know what can happen, especially when so many motorists are distracted these days”

There is a lot of traffic these days, she said. This is one of the main arteries of Raleigh. A situation like this can create accidents on the track. There are many incidents of close calls. We use the crossing every day as we come to school.

The Millbrook Road crossing along with six others on the railway tracks will be the subject of a community meeting sponsored by the Rail Division of the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The division director Paul Worley explained, "What we're doing is looking to route the roads over or under the railroad, which also improves traffic, improves mobility, and of course safety."

If things go according to the plan, eliminating the seven crossings by building flyovers or tunnels under the roads will begin in 2020.

The state officials likely will eliminate most crossings on major rail arteries throughout North Carolina. The decision will not only make motorists safe, but will also quick commuter trains.
